New York City Light Snow Final Call

New York City Light Snow Final Call

02/16/24 10:12am ET

Good morning everyone. We continue to watch a very compact system that’ll scoot well south of the New York City area, bringing light to moderate snow (possibly a brief period of heavy snow) to parts of the Mid-Atlantic and extreme southern areas of the Northeast. New York City and Long Island will get in on some of the action, but it’ll be very light and of no consequence; especially travel-wise since it’s the weekend.

Meanwhile, the southern component of this system will get hung up along the Gulf (again), and bring some heavy rain and thunderstorms to the Gulf Coast and especially Florida. I think at this point, points west of Florida will be spared the worst as far as rain and storms, but Florida itself could be in line for another round of severe weather. As a wave of low pressure forms when our batch of moisture approaches Florida, it could have enough convection and shear to spawn some embedded severe storms containing large hail, gusty winds, and isolated tornadoes. The timeline looks to be some time between late morning Sunday and Sunday evening.

Here is your local NYC Metro Area forecast, including our final snow accumulation call –

It’s going to be breezy and chilly today, with highs in the low 40’s and winds gusting 25-30mph in spots. Clouds increase overnight, and scattered light snow should begin some time between 12 and 3am. We could see a brief period of steady light snow before sunrise, but it looks like this batch of moisture is on the move fairly quickly. Lows overnight in the near 30 range.

WEATHER RADAR

Any remaining light snow or flurries should be gone early tomorrow, followed by breezy conditions and late clearing. Highs in the mid to upper 30’s. As far as snow amounts, I continue to believe this is a trace – 1″ type system for the NYC area and Long Island. Could we get more? It’s possible, but I’m sticking to the lower amount. The best chance to see a trace to 2″ snowfall, would be the south shore of Staten Island, where they could be walking on the edge of steadier snow. The best chance to see “heavier” snows, would be across parts of the Mid-Atalntic, southern PA, and southern NJ, where 2-5″ may fall.

Regardless, in NYC and LI, everything melts when the sun returns (if there’s anything to melt), and highs Sunday will be in the upper 30’s under full sunshine.

Temps modify Monday onward, where sunshine continues and we climb from low 40’s to near 50 by mid-week.
