NYC ADVISORY LEVEL PLUS SNOWFALL LIKELY

NYC ADVISORY LEVEL PLUS SNOWFALL LIKELY – Good morning New York City metro area! For those not in the loop, we’re about to get reminded of how distant we are from the unseasonably warm weather we had in the early to mid fall.

Winter Weather Advisories are up for the entire area as low pressure down south gains steam, and will get close enough to be invigorated by an upper air disturbance coming down from Canada. These two systems will combine to help bring us our first measurable snow for the winter.

As far as timing, things are moving along quickly and we should see our first light flakes by early to mid morning tomorrow. Depending on when it starts falling, will dictate if it has problems sticking on the streets initially. However, it’ll eventually start sticking in most areas (aside from the busy City streets) since the rate of snowfall will increase enough and we’ll only be 2-3 degrees about freezing for highs, then drop as the day goes on.

Snow will be with us for most of the day once it gets started, and should last well into tomorrow night, before tapering off between 10pm-1am. I still have some issues in my mind in terms of whether some areas see a mix of rain. While we have a lot of cold air available, the surface low itself is very “warm” with its Gulf origins. The stronger it gets and the closer it gets, the chance increases that parts of eastern Long Island and the immediate south shore may see some mixing at some point before cold air wins out again and it all goes completely back to snow again.

That being said, it looks as if somewhere on Long Island will wind up in the sweet spot in terms of highest snowfall amounts. For this reason, don’t be surprised if Winter Storm Warnings pop up last minute in areas if we see no mixing and that heavier band of snow set up.

We’re at the point now where there shouldn’t be any drastic changes aside from some fine tuning as far as who will see the heaviest amounts. Look for a general 3-5″/3-6″ swath of snow, but we could see a some localized 6+” amounts. In order to pinpoint these areas, we’ll have to wait and see the final setup and structure of this system.

In the long term, everyone is already asking about our next system. Let’s get past this one first, then we’ll focus on what to expect early next week. So far this one seems to be the bigger of the two. Stay tuned!
