NYC AREA BLIZZARD WARNINGS IN EFFECT LATE TONIGHT TOMORROW
NYC AREA BLIZZARD WARNINGS IN EFFECT LATE TONIGHT TOMORROW – Good morning everyone! On the anniversary of the Blizzard of 1888, Blizzard warnings are now in effect for the NYC area. This means that Blizzard conditions are imminent in the next 24 hours and should last until at least Tuesday late evening. The ingredients are coming together perfectly and I’m very comfortable with the forecast we’ve been discussing for the past several days.
Today, we’ll have sunny skies in the morning, with clouds increasing in the evening, highs in the low to mid 30’s and light winds for the calm before the storm. Snow will begin late tonight between 1 and 3 A.M., covering the roads and everything else fairly quickly with temps in the mid to upper 20’s; we should have approx. 2-4″ when you wake up. By daybreak, snow will pick up in intensity and come down at a frenzied pace at times, especially in areas where banding and thundersnow occurs. Highs will barely crack 30 in the NYC area and we’ll see another 12-18″ of snow on top of what we saw overnight. Winds will be sustained at 30-40 mph, with 45-55mph gusts, but may hit 60-65mph along the immediate coast. Moderate Coastal Flooding will be an issue for the usual areas prone to flooding in the storm of this magnitude combined with a full moon. Areas such as Gerritsen Beach, Brooklyn and Broad Channel, Queens, need to take note. Also, areas such as Long Beach, Baldwin, Freeport, Bayville, Lindenhurst, and other flood prone areas on Long Island, need to take the same precautions in regards to the prospect of moderate coastal flooding.
Along the immediate coast, some mixing with sleet could happen at times or an extended period before changing back to snow. This could keep amounts in the lower spectrum of the 1-2ft range I put most of the area in, but we need to watch this closely because just a slight shift in the system can make a difference for or against higher accumulations. This is especially the case in eastern areas of Suffolk County on Long Island. Overnight tomorrow, snow begins to taper off, giving us a few more inches before going to flurries through sunrise Wednesday. *Scroll down for accumulation maps*
ANGRY BEN’S SNOW ACCUMULATION MAP
NYC AREA BLIZZARD WARNINGS IN EFFECT LATE TONIGHT TOMORROW – Above is the accumulation map generated long before the jury was in on this system in regards to weather model data. I have stuck with this forecast as models wavered and I continue to stick with this solution. Lesser accumulations on the east end of LI reflect that chance of an extended period of sleet. Any minor shift could change that and we will make any adjustments needed, if any, as everything unfolds.
National Weather Service Maps
The latest run of NWS maps begin to closely mirror Angry Ben’s map, validating my original solution.
ANNIVERSARY OF THE BLIZZARD OF 1888
On the anniversary of the Blizzard of 1888, we watch a storm capable of the same intensity 129 years later on the same date. Lowest pressure observed in 1888 was 983mb, and the latest GFS run has a 983mb storm off of the Long Island coast; some models go even lower.
Is it the same? Yes and no. While strength may be similar, this system is moving much faster and won’t put up the same numbers as The Blizzard of 1888. Also, a lot of the death and destruction in 1888 was caused by antiquated infrastructure, poor infrastructure planning, lack of modern meteorology, and exposure to elements by people trying to get to work so they weren’t fired. Today, after 1-3 days of inconvenience, we can shake a storm like this off like a bad habit.
In order to cut down on any tragedies, safety is key. Do not travel unless there is an emergency. Leave the roads to the first responders and cleanup crews. Help the elderly and sick, check on them if there are any power outages. Also, clean up in small increments and wear layered clothing. If you start feeling dizzy or have shortness of breathe, stop immediately. If symptoms persist at rest, seek medical attention promptly.
We will continue to update as things unfold. Thank you again for tuning in.
Satellite View
NYC AREA BLIZZARD WARNINGS IN EFFECT LATE TONIGHT TOMORROW – Satellite shows very clearly the ingredients coming together. Cold air hangs in while a vigorous disturbance coming through the Midwest will merge with moisture in the Southeast, then form a powerful low off of the Mid-Atlantic.
Northeast Radar
Radar is quiet, but will begin to fill in overnight as heavy snow will trek up the coast.
