NYC Back to Back Systems Expected With Flooding Rain

03/06/24 11:23am ET

Good morning everyone. As we speak, a shield of moderate to heavy rain is making its way into the NYC Metropolitan area, bringing with it flash flood watches up and down the Northeast and New England Coast. That is the big story of the day, so we will focus on that, then discuss our next system expected to trek across the South and Northeast Friday through Sunday.

Two waves of low pressure are currently setting up to move up the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast Coast. The first one is already there and knocking on NYC’s door. Moderate to heavy rain is expected over the next few hours, causing flooding issues in the typical/notorious flood prone areas. After that, we will watch the second wave of low pressure (currently bringing heavy rain and a few rumbles to the Carolinas) move up the East Coast and bring another wave of moderate to heavy rain.

This will pack onto the heavy rain that will have already fallen, created more flooding headaches for the general area. After that, we will watch our next system get its act together and bring a new round of strong to severe thunderstorms along the Gulf States, heavy soaking rain to the Southeast, and then more soaking rain up the coast and into New England. This one is a little different as cold air will push in behind it. For that reason, we are expecting heavy lake effect snows as a parting gift late Sunday/Monday, and maybe even some flurries reaching into NW New Jersey and possibly NYC if they survive the trip.

Here is your local NYC Metro forecast –
