NYC Big Storm Setting Sights On Southeast MidAtlantic Northeast
Good morning everyone. Our first system is beginning to gather up energy off of the Southeast coast and will slam into Nova Scotia. As expected and discussed a few days ago, Hurricane Force Wind advisories have been posted off of the New England coast. Gale and Storm warnings are posted locally, as strong northerly winds will create very rough sea conditions and also pull down more frigid air. That’ll help set up the scenario for late Sunday into Monday, as another vigorous system forms, heads inland just from the coast, or at the coast itself.
SATELLITE
Today will be the last nice day of the 5 day stretch, with sunshine, low to mid 40’s, and light winds. Our big storm offshore will increase the clouds tomorrow, increase the winds, and we may see a few sprinkles out east. Highs tomorrow will be seasonably chilly/cool in the near 40 range, but the blustery flow from the north will make things feel colder. Lows overnight tomorrow will be frigid, with single digits to near 10.
WEATHER RADAR
Clouds decrease on Saturday, but the wind and the very cold stays. Look for increasing sunshine and highs in the upper teens to near 20. Overnight, we drop back down into the single digits to near 10 again.
Clouds will increase again on Sunday as our big system approaches, and highs will be in the low to mid 30’s.
The big question remains what will happen overnight Sunday into Monday. As of now, I wouldn’t count out the chances of seeing snow in the NYC area, especially if models continue to trend slightly east. We are still at an inland or at-coast solution for now, but an at-coast system could bring an extended period of snow before changing to rain, then back to snow as the system pulls away. An inland route would give us a brief period of snow or none at all, with heavy rain and maybe a parting shot of snow at the very end.
Either way, this will be an impressive system, dropping big snows for those who see all or mostly snow. Plus, winds will be a big issue along the immediate coast, with 40-50mph sustained winds possibles and gusts in the 60-70 range; especially at the Forks, Block Island, Nantucket, and Martha’s Vineyard.
