NYC Chilly Week Ahead Mid Month Cold Blast Possible
Good “snowy” morning everyone and welcome back. Post-storm coverage will be light considering the light accumulations throughout the NYC Metro Area. However, parts of NJ and upstate NY got blasted pretty well with some heavy wet snow and gusty winds. The result are school closings, power outages, and downed tree limbs.
As for us, Manhattan came into the lower end of that 2-4″ spectrum on the snow map posted yesterday. Central Park reported 1.5″ of snow at 1am, and with a few more hours of snow, its a given they approached or exceeded 2″. Areas of the south shore of Long Island fell into that trace-2″ of snow, and central parts of the counties hit their 1-3″ on the low to mid range of the spectrum. The East End of Long Island got 2-3+” in spots where nobody expected anything, but I had them on a 2-6″ range due to the chance of a parting, heavier band of snow.
The big bust goes to areas of Brooklyn and Queens, where 2-4″ predicted got them a mere dusting. We expected a bust area, as well as an upside area, but you simply cannot predict on a 2 part system where it’ll set up. Overall I am happy with the forecast laid out, and comfortable I didn’t buy into the higher amounts models/media outlets were predicting.
SATELLITE
Onto the current weather, and we have scattered light snow/flurries exiting the area. We’ll see some late sun today, but a stiff NW flow will keep the air feeling chilly with highs in the upper 30’s to near 40.
Clouds creep in tonight as a reinforcing shot of cool air heads in, and we’ll have another chilly one tomorrow with more clouds than sun. Highs tomorrow in the upper 30’s to low 40’s.
REGIONAL RADAR
More sun returns on Thursday, but the chill and steady wind remains. We’re not expecting a windy day, but steady 10-20mph westerlies and low 40’s will keep things feeling cold on the skin.
Friday we introduce more clouds again with yet another reinforcing shot of cooler air, and low 40’s remain a constant. Overnight though, cold air heads in and we drop into the 20’s.
LOCAL RADAR NEW YORK CITY
Your weekend so far is looking mixed, with a cold and sunny day on Saturday and only mid to upper 30’s as highs; then we modify on Sunday into the mid 40’s as another system makes a very slow approach.
LOCAL RADAR PHILADELPHIA
Next week is looking interesting in terms of a wide temp range. If the timing works out, a warm front will be lurking Monday, which will be our transition day. Then we get into some milder air as a large system goes well north and west of us. On the back-end though, unseasonably cold air looks to flood into the lower 48.
We could see 55-60 degree temps mid-week, then 20’s and 30’s by late week if things continue to hold. Overall, December is looking much like November, which is below average temp-wise as a whole.
