NYC Coastal Flooding Possible Today

10/16/24 9:31am ET

Good morning everyone. We’re starting off the day on the cool to cold side depending on your location in the Northeast, and we’ll remain unseasonably cool throughout the day. Temperatures in the 40’s will only rise into the mid 50’s at best in most areas, then we’ll have to contend with more frost advisories and freeze warnings overnight tonight in areas of southeast New York, northeast Pennsylvania, and parts of Connecticut.

Enhanced tides will also bring a risk of coastal flooding in parts of the NYC area and Long Island. Most of this action looks to be in the Jamaica Bay area of Queens & Brooklyn, plus the back bays of Nassau County along the south shore. This is due to astronomical high tides and the “perfect” alignment of our full moon, earth, and the sun; combined with a coastal storm that’ll graze the Mid-Atlantic; then move just offshore of the Northeast & New England.

That coastal storm will bring rain, a stiff breeze, and some flooding to parts of coastal North Carolina today and tonight. We could also see some extra clouds and showers along parts of southeast Virginia. Things will clear out late tomorrow, but enhanced tides remain for an extra day or two. As our coastal storm pulls away, low pressure is expected to deepen and will be capable of 40+ mph winds. At this point, it’ll only be a hazard to shipping interests.
