NYC Coastal Storm Forecast Fine-Tuning

Good morning everyone. As we get closer to the approach of our coastal storm expected to impact New England and the Northeast, we fine tune to take into account the usual wobbles and nuances that comes with a system like this. Luckily and to make things easier, we’re not dealing with rain/snow lines; but we do have to watch that shield of precip to see how far it retrogrades. Wind hazards and coastal flooding/rough surf hazards remain the same, with the strongest winds still likely across the east end of Long Island and the SE coast of New England. Coastal flooding looks to be on the minor to moderate side, with peak issues expected tomorrow and Saturday. Check out the latest below…

SATELLITE

For the rest of today, look for sun & clouds, cool & breezy conditions, with highs in the low to mid 60’s. NE winds will gust to 30mph, slightly strong along the shore and out on Long Island. Clouds increase tonight, same wind profile, and lows in the mid 50’s.

WEATHER RADAR

As of this moment, it looks as if the retrograde will happen off the coast of Long Island and Connecticut as opposed to off Cape Code, back into Boston, and over land. This will set us up for a rainier forecast and different timing overall. For tomorrow, look for continued thickening/lowering of clouds, breezy conditions, and highs in the 65-70 range depending on how much sun we get. The risk of some showers will increase by afternoon. Winds increase to 30-35mph gusts; and again, stronger along the coast and out east. Areas such as Montauk, could see wind gusts of 45-50mph tomorrow afternoon.

Wind gusts increase to 35-40mph overnight Friday, then we remain gusty and rainy on Saturday. Wind gusts out on the east end of Long Island could reach 55mph in spots. Look for more gusty conditions on Sunday with showers. Overall, total rain amounts at this moment look like 1-3 inches over 48 hours, so rain flooding is not expected. Out east, rain amounts could be in the 3-5″ rain, but again, over 48hours. Look for the risk of minor to moderate flooding, especially in flood prone areas along the Great South Bay, Freeport, Baldwin, and Long Beach.
