NYC FLASH FLOOD WATCHES ISSUED THUNDERY THURSDAY POSSIBLE
Good morning everyone. Clouds are arriving as we speak with our next system expected to spread rain and maybe even some thunder into the NYC area. Flash Flood Watches have been posted as expected, and we begin the process again. Meanwhile, fast shots of very cold air continue to be on the horizon, and sections of the first week of February look to be very cold at times.
EASTERN SATELLITE
Clouds will continue to lower and thicken today as rain arrives late. I think we stay dry for at least the morning and early afternoon, then the chance of a few showers before the main batch of rain moves in later at night. Highs today will be in the low to mid 40’s with a stiff WSW breeze developing.
We climb to near 50 tonight as winds help pump in milder air from the south and we’ll have heavy rain at times from about midnight onward.
The chance of heavy rain continues for tomorrow and we should peak out in the low to mid 50’s before the front passes and temps begin to sink back down into the 40’s. While it’s not being discussed, as that front passes, I think we may hear a few rumbles of thunder in spots.
Overall, we’ll see 1-2 inches of rain out of this, maybe some locally higher amounts where that heavier precip sets up; hence the need for the Flash Flood Watches with oversaturated ground and heavy rain expected.
REGIONAL RADAR
On Friday, the sun returns as does seasonably cold temps and dry conditions. Look for highs in the low to mid 30’s. Overnight Friday, very cold air heads back in and lows will be back in the teens.
Saturday, the brief shot of colder air remains in place as we might not reach/break 30. Expect highs in the mid to upper 20’s in most spots, but clouds and an approaching system will keep us from sinking much lower at night.
To finish the weekend, a weak system passes to our north, possibly touching off some wet snow snowflakes. Most of the action will be to our north, but we’ll be watching for any stray, scattered, snow showers surviving the trip into the NYC metro area; highs Sunday in the mid to upper 30’s.
LOCAL RADAR NEW YORK CITY
The sun returns yet again for Monday to start next week off in the mid to upper 30’s, then we watch for out next system heading into the area for Tuesday. As of this moment, it’s taking another snow-hostile path as the two branches of the jet stream do not feel like partnering up anytime soon.
We’ll keep an eye on that for any changes as we still have tonight, tomorrow, and Sunday’s system to get through.
Either way, the end of January/start to February looks like a roller coaster in terms of of brief shots of very cold air, front-related milder air, and seasonably cold air. While nothing like Martin Luther King Day is expected cold-wise, we could in-fact get a few days in early February that might not make it to 20.
