SOAKING RAIN EXPECTED NYC COLD AIR MODIFIES
Good morning everyone. Bitter cold air in the NYC area will slowly begin to modify today with a new system approaching. Soaking rain may bring some flooding issues as we remain oversaturated.
EASTERN SATELLITE
Clouds will slowly be on the move back into the area today, but at least winds will begin to calm down as the day goes on. We’re waking up now to some low to mid teens; however, we’ll rise into the mid to upper 20’s today. Tonight, clouds will act as a blanket and keep us above 20 in the NYC area, upper teens on Long Island except for the Pine Barrens where colder temps are expected.
REGIONAL RADAR
If you read yesterday’s forecast, there was talk of some frozen precip. My issue was with timing and said the later precip arrives, the less of a chance we’ll see any wintry precip. Well, our system arrives way too late, so rain it is.
Expect rain to arrive between 11am and 2pm tomorrow, highs in the mid 40’s. As we go into the night, milder air begins to push in and we actually rise, not fall tomorrow night and we climb to near 50.
For Thursday, rain remains in the picture as that front is slow to pass and a wave of energy form along it to re-energize the front. That near 50 temp from tomorrow night will be our high, then you’ll see temps fall through the day with a cold rain before things end. Don’t be surprised to see a wet snowflake or two as our system departs.
Total rain amounts should be in the 1-2″ realm, which means we could see some flash flood watches pop up.
LOCAL RADAR NEW YORK CITY
On Friday, the sun returns as we dip back to average and into the mid 30’s, then colder air moves on for a Saturday encore. Expect breezy and cold conditions, highs in the 25-30 range.
On Sunday, a weak disturbance will pass by and possibly touch off a few flakes, but most of the action will be well update; highs in the mid to upper 30’s.
Relatively average temps hang out to start next week, then we have another opportunity for some temporary very cold temps mid-week. Meanwhile, that milder air I saw down the road looks short-lived as that ridge collapses quickly and colder air rushes back in before the first week of February ends.
