NYC Flooding Rain Possible With Tropical Showers & Storms

NYC Flooding Rain Possible With Tropical Showers & Storms

07/12/24 12:01pm ET

Good afternoon everyone. We have an active day today up and down the East Coast as tropical moisture rides the I95 corridor from Florida, to the Carolinas, Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, New York, and up into New England. This is the same batch of stubborn tropical energy that brought flooding rains, waterspouts, and embedded severe weather to Florida yesterday.

We hold onto this wide-ranging system through tomorrow, then our East Coast heatwave kicks back in with a vengeance. Until then, we’ll be watching for more flooding rains in South Florida, the Carolinas, and up the rest of the East Coast/inland from the coast. We could also see embedded heavier storms and we have; so be advised that while we don’t have any severe thunderstorm watches at this time, we could see individual severe thunderstorm & marine warnings. Some of these storms will be capable of marble-sized hail, gusty winds, torrential rain, frequent cloud-to-ground lightning, and waterspouts along near-shore areas.

In other weather-related news, we are watching the Upper Midwest very closely as some energy comes down from Canada and into North Dakota and Minnesota. The potential is there for a complex of nocturnal storms to develop and head rapidly to the south/southeast before moving east/southeast through the rest of Minnesota; possibly into Wisconsin. These storms will be capable of damaging winds, very large hail, and the possibility of some strong tornadoes. The time frame on this seems to be late tonight and into the early morning hours tomorrow.

For today and tomorrow, looks for warm and humid conditions with on and off heavy showers and thunderstorms. Slow moving tropical moisture will increase the risk of flash flooding in poor drainage and low lying areas. Highs in the low to mid 80’s each day.

WEATHER RADAR

The sizzle returns on Sunday with the return of hot air and sunshine. Expect hot conditions as highs reach into the low to mid 90’s.

We have an uncomfortably hot workweek ahead until the passage of a cold front on Thursday. Look for mostly sunny skies, oppressive humidity, and highs in the mid 90’s Monday, mid to upper 90’s Tuesday, then low to mid 90’s on Wednesday as that cold front approaches. We could also see a powerful line of severe weather out of this, but the payoff will be mid 80’s Thursday with lower humidity.
