NYC Getting Late In The Game To Make Up Snow Deficit
Good morning everyone. We have more rain heading our way, and that makes for another system without snow. At this point, with each system that doesn’t give us any snow, the situation becomes more “dire” in terms of not adding to our average snowfall. I say “dire” in quotes because it’s not a big deal unless you’re a snow lover. We’ve been getting enough rain to make up for the lack of snowpack, and we won’t be facing a drought situation coming into Spring.
SATELLITE
For today, look for a sunny start, then increasing clouds. We remain dry throughout the day and highs in the mid 40’s.
Rain moves in tonight, and will be us through tomorrow afternoon. Clouds will be stubborn to leave and will linger into tomorrow night. Highs tomorrow in the upper 40’s to near 50, then the cold air begins to arrive.
REGIONAL RADAR
Tomorrow night’s lows won’t be too bad and should be near 30, but then we don’t recover on Friday. We may creep up a few degrees under sunshine and steady northwesterlies, but then quickly fall back to near 30, then the upper 20’s as the day wears on.
Low Friday night will be the “big story” as we go into the low to mid teens throughout the area. Look for single digits well upstate as well.
LOCAL RADAR NEW YORK CITY
Cold air sticks around for Saturday as we reach 30 and that’s about it, but we don’t do teens again as temps modify quickly. We’re back to mid 40’s again on Sunday and Monday with sunshine, then another system will bring more rain late Tuesday.
LOCAL RADAR PHILADELPHIA
More cold air heads in on Wednesday, but it’s fleeting and simply can’t hold on. Next week, we may even hold onto dry air for a full 5-7 day stretch before our next system, which is something we haven’t seen in a while.
Either way, it’s getting very late in the game for several reasons, not just the date. Ocean temps are above normal, we have a lack of major snow pack in the area, and the sun will start to get a little stronger too.
We’ve seen snow in March and April so we know it can happen, but these factors added into the mix makes it even more complicated to pull off any major snowfall. You would need a very powerful system, with a perfect path and perfect timing to pull off a big comeback. There is no margin of error when we get this late in the season, with this type of winter, and the oceans running 3-5 degrees above average.
Without a Blizzard of 1888 type storm (they had a mild winter with little snow), this year will join the ranks with 1877-78, 1900-01, 1918-19, 1931-32, 1972-73, 1988-89, 1997-98, 2001-02, and 2011-12. As you can see, it does happen once in a while.
