NYC Heatwave Ends Tomorrow Evening But Very Warm To Hot Weather Continues

Good morning everyone. Today will be the hottest day of this stretch for most spots, then we “settle back down” into the low to mid 90’s for a bonus hot day tomorrow. Everything comes to an end after tomorrow, but don’t be fooled. We are having ourselves a textbook, old school, NYC summer, and the heat really isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.

Look for variable clouds and sun as the hot airmass begins a changing of the guard today with a wind shift. SSW winds will gradually go west and become gusty, and we’ll be flirting with 100 in the notoriously hotter spots during a heatwave – downtown Brooklyn, central Queens, the Bronx, northern Nassau, and parts of NJ. Everyone else aside from south facing shorelines of Queens and Long Island, will be seeing mid to upper 90’s.

We’ll also throw in the slight chance of a hefty PM thunderstorm, but the action will be widely scattered.

For tomorrow, we dry out slightly as those westerlies continue. That extra sunshine will help give us one more very hot day, but I don’t think we’ll be seeing widespread upper 90’s. Expect low to mid 90’s in most spots, and we may even see 90 at some spots along the shore tomorrow. That’ll conclude our short heatwave with things changing temporarily on Wednesday.

Don’t look for your staple cool, comfortable, breezy July day we get sometimes after a 4-5 day bout of mid 90’s. We are going very warm and humid on Wednesday, with a decent shot at some showers and storms as energy rides the rim of the hot ridge. Highs will be a juicy mid to upper 80’s.

90’s may return temporarily as that ridge tries to push back. Then we’ll either hit 90 again on Friday or “sink’ back down into the mid to upper 80’s.

Next weekend is looking very warm/hot and humid as the juicy air returns, and upper 80’s to near 90 will reign supreme.

Overall, we are not cooling down by any means in terms of the big picture. Upper 80’s to near 90 will be commonplace, and I think we have plenty of 90+ degree weather left here. Looking at some of the long range models, I see at least 2 more chances of similar “short” heatwaves like we are experiencing right now. The first one may see us sending July off in the mid 90’s, and the next is a big ridge trying to build in towards the end of the first week of August or into that 2nd week.

Stay tuned and we’ll see what happens.
