NYC Last Mild Day Before Cool Invasion

10/13/24 11:00am ET

Good morning everyone. The Northeast is in transition-mode today and early tomorrow as much cooler air begins to creep down from the Great Lakes region. As this transition takes place, we’ll have some heavy showers and thunderstorms to contend with today, especially across central and eastern Pennsylvania.

Currently speaking, we have some stronger storms racing across the state, with strong winds, half-inch size hail, frequent lighting, and torrential rain. Things will begin to settle down overnight and into tomorrow, with a few leftover showers possible before we really cool down. In many areas of the Northeast, temperatures will struggle to get out of the 50’s for daytime highs, and will drop into the 20’s overnight in some of the higher elevations.

We could also see some early-season snows in areas of upper New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine as low pressure scoots on by. There is a lot of very cold air aloft with this one, so evaporative cooling could change any rain into a mix of rain & snow or all snow for a short burst before coming to an end.

In the Upper Midwest, frost advisories and freeze warnings have been issued for overnight tonight as temps dip well below freezing in spots. We expect cool temps during the day and unseasonably cold conditions overnight for the next few days across North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, and possibly into northern parts of Kansas.

In the Southeast, widely scattered heavy showers and thunderstorms continue to lurk around south Florida and the Florida Keys. We’ll have to contend with this over the next few days, and some of those thunderstorms will contain locally damaging winds, frequent lightning, torrential rain, and the risk for a few waterspouts. As always this time of year, we’ll have to keep an eye on the tropics when it comes to stalled-out energy that sticks around for too long.
