NYC Light Snow Sleet Freezing Rain & Rain Expected Tomorrow

Good morning everyone. Our system tomorrow continues to look like it’s going to unfold as I expected, but with a higher chance of mixed precip for the NYC area and not just Long Island and the NJ shore. Other than that, this is a generally light event for the metro area, and our next system scoots out to sea quietly next week.

Expect sunshine for most of the day today, then increasing clouds late. Highs will be in the upper 30’s to near 40. There’s a slight chance of some light snow before sunrise tomorrow, but most of the “action” will be during the day Tuesday. With lows near 30, anything that may fall will stick, but it’ll most likely be a dusting or coating at best, if anything at all.

Even though tomorrow is a light event, it’ll still be a complicated forecast. For almost a week now, I’ve been talking about snow possibly changing to rain or mix, and things are going in that direction. Until that changeover occurs, expect a coating to an inch of snow, then mixing with sleet, freezing rain, then rain; holding totals down. Parts of the south shore of Long Island may see all rain at some point, or a mix of rain and snow with majority rain. Where that happens is where you’ll see the lowest amounts of snow accumulation, if anything at all.

Remember, this is a light event and I don’t really see any surprises going on here. The best chance for an “upside surprise” will be NW NJ if the mixing is minimal or none at all. The higher elevations may pull off 2-4″ of snow if the mixing is held down or non-existent.

Leftover clouds and a light rain/snow mix may stick around for part of Wednesday, then partial clearing will ensue. For Thursday and Friday, our next system exits quietly well south of us, and that allows cold air to spill in on Friday. Look for low 30’s on Thursday, then upper 20’s to near 30 for highs on Friday. Low to mid teens are possible overnight Friday.
