NYC Mild Dominant October Continues And Lasts

Good morning everyone. Warmer air begins to make its push towards us for tomorrow and Friday, but not before one more day of some clouds sticking around. Overall, October is looking very mild/warm, and will by far outnumber the individual, cooler days ahead. You can thank some of the tropical activity around in both the Atlantic and the Pacific, and I’ll explain “how” below.

For today, low to mid-level clouds grace us this morning again, but we should see some blue patches as well today. 75 degrees will be hard to reach, but I think low 70’s will be a fair shot and not too far off from the original forecast.

WEATHER RADAR

Sunshine and a warmth-friendly wind profile visit us tomorrow and Friday, with sunshine and near 80 temps both days. Clouds ahead of our next front will creep in Friday night/Saturday morning, and we should see 75-80 degree temps on Saturday depending on how much sun we get. We could also see some afternoon showers, but again, most of that energy from the front will be going well north of us.

Sunday is more October-like, with low to mid 60’s for highs, and crisp upper 40’s to low 50’s as lows.

In the long range, the mild air actually does a good job fighting back. Our tropical activity in the Atlantic from last month put a big enough kink in the jet stream to allow some mild air to stick around. Then, the strong “monsoon” flow in the Southwest is pushing systems further north into the Upper Plains. This allows warm air to flow higher north, then drift east towards us with each system. Meanwhile, it keeps the West cooler/colder, allowing for some early season snow.

A lot of people don’t know that the Southwest has a monsoon season. Sometimes it is very weak or non-existent, other times it is strong like this time around. A weaker monsoon season usually equates to a cooler Northeast, while a stronger season increases the chance of a mild October/early November up here.
