NYC ONE TWO PUNCH BRINGING HEAVY RAIN COLD AIR
Good morning everyone. We have one more nice day here in the New York City area before things start getting a little squirrelly here. Two systems relatively close to one another will help not only bring heavy rain and wind, but also two shots of cold air.
EASTERN SATELLITE
For today, wispy high clouds will cross the area, but it’ll remain a bright, sunny day. A light NW wind will help keep things feeling comfortable as we reach a near-seasonal low to mid 50’s. Overnight, clouds will slowly increase as system #1 lurks for Friday.
REGIONAL RADAR
For our first system, a wide-ranging frontal system will head into the area. As with many of the systems we’ve seen throughout the past several weeks, most of the energy will go well to our north and west. However, a vigorous wave of energy will form along the trailing front and cross the area. This will give a chance of light rain come mid to late afternoon tomorrow, then rain (heavy at times) and wind will increase as that wave of energy moves in. Winds in the NYC area could gust to near 30mph, but coastal areas could see some 35-40mph gusts at the peak of this system overnight tomorrow. We’re also looking at 1-3″ total for the system, giving the potential for the area to experience flooding in poor drainage areas. Highs tomorrow will be a raw-feeling low 50’s with that stiff easterly wind.
LOCAL RADAR NEW YORK CITY
The immediate big story to me, is the cold air behind our first system. Look for a sunny and windy Saturday, but the sun won’t do much as a Canadian blast of cold air works in. Highs will only reach the low to mid 40’s and Sunday isn’t looking any better. Also, Saturday is looking very cold with lows in the low 30’s on the heat island, and 20’s away from the City. Cold air remains locked in place for Sunday as winds settle down somewhat; highs again in the low to mid 40’s. Then we watch for system #2 to start the week.
LOCAL RADAR PHILADELPHIA
On Monday, we continue that relatively cold air, but at least start to climb out of the cellar with highs in the mid to upper 40’s. This is due to another system, potentially more powerful than Fridays, heading our way. This time around, we have another system going well to our north and west, but a wave could develop earlier, then redevelop off of or near the coast further south.
This will give it a chance to gather up more moisture and strength before heading our way. That setup will give us potential for higher rain totals and stronger winds for Tuesday compared to tomorrow’s system. It’ll also bring in colder air for a longer duration and deeper into the Nation. With that colder air moving in and some in place already, upstate and inland areas of New England have the potential to see a period of heavy snow/heavy mix. Over here, we may also see some wet snowflakes mixed in with any precip before it departs.
Look for the potential for low 40’s as highs and 20’s at night for several days into mid-week next week and into that weekend.
