NYC Pleasant Weather Continues

08/21/24 12:00pm ET

Good afternoon everyone. The Northeast is basking under very comfortable conditions and even some unseasonably cool weather in spots, especially in upstate New York, Vermont, and New Hampshire. Some areas may only see highs in the 50’s and 60’s today, and lows dipping into the 40’s in spots. There is a late September bite to the air for sure, but the coastal plain is comfortable in the 70’s before 80’s return in a couple of days.

Our focus remains on the severe weather risk in areas of the Upper Plains & Midwest as small waves of energy exit the mountain ranges and bump into the warmer and more humid air. Areas such as Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, then into extreme eastern Colorado, southeast Wyoming, Nebraska, and parts of Kansas, all have the risk of some severe weather later this afternoon and/or into tonight.

While we won’t see anything widespread with lines of severe weather hundreds of miles long, small clusters or complexes of severe weather could get a little spicy as the day wears on into the evening. Damaging winds and large hail will be the main risk for our storms in Montana and the Dakotas, but we will see a higher risk of tornadoes with the Nebraska/Kansas batch this evening.

As far as the tropics, we are very quiet right now. However, while it is not mentioned by the National Weather Service and the NHC, I do believe we need to watch the Southeast very closely towards the end of the month. This is because a stationary front is set to stall out near North & South Carolina and drape itself across parts of Georgia and/or Florida. This is the time of year where we begin to watch old, stalled out fronts for the possibility of them generating waves of low pressure that can eventually become tropical.

We’ll keep an eye on that for you as the month comes to a close. Here is your local NYC Metro forecast –
