NYC Warmth Builds to Crescendo Sunday

08/23/24 11:51am ET

Good late morning everyone. We have another beautiful day in the Northeast, with mostly clear skies aside from a few instability clouds that dot the hills and mountain ranges. We also have warmth building back up, with 80’s returning to the coastal plains. We’ll remain comfortably warm until Sunday, where upper 80’s to near 90 temps return with some higher humidity. As far as any storms are concerned, the risk of severe weather returns on Monday with the chance of some strong to severe storms in the afternoon/evening.

Elsewhere, we’ll be watching throughout the day and evening for some more Rockies-sourced severe weather. Moisture in the form of light to moderate spotty showers have already begin to build across parts of Utah and Colorado, and we will watch the “seeds” grow into more volatile individual cells and clusters as the day wears on.

As those storms grow and move to the east, some severe weather is possible in parts of eastern Utah, into Colorado, and possibly across Nebraska as those storms exit the Rockies. The biggest risk with these storms will be very large hail and damaging winds, but we could also see an isolated tornado like we saw yesterday at the Colorado/Kansas border. A better risk of widespread severe weather presents itself in the Upper Midwest on Sunday.

We’re also watching heavy tropical-like showers and thunderstorms lurking off of the Florida Gulf Coast and the Southeast coast as a whole. While we don’t expect this action to row into the coasts and cause a major problem, we could see some torrential rain and rumbles brush the coast from South Carolina on down to Georgia and Florida.
