NYC Pop Up Storms Then Afternoon Evening Severe Weather Possible

NYC Pop Up Storms Then Afternoon Evening Severe Weather Possible

Good thundery morning everyone. Yesterday, we spoke of showers and storms popping up at any point during the day today, and this morning is testament to that. We have a small wave of energy moving through as we speak, touching off some rumbles of thunder, especially skirting the south shore of Queens and Long Island. We’ll be watching the radar all day for areas like this popping up randomly; but then we watch closely as a couple of vigorous waves ahead of our cold front, which will begin to approach the area late afternoon and evening.

After this morning’s small round of storms, expect sun and clouds, very humid conditions, and highs in the mid to upper 80’s. At any point during the day, more pop up action like this may form and they will be tropical in nature, with brief torrential rain and some heavy rumbles.

For this afternoon, a couple of vigorous waves will approach the area, giving the atmosphere some extra lift and some extra twist. These will touch off severe weather, with the biggest threat being strong winds, frequent lightning, flash flooding, and hail. We could also see an isolated tornado out of this, but right now the chance is small. It is summer though and there’s enough juice, so we can’t rule it out completely.

We’ll have to wait and see if the two waves daisy-chain and combine, or come in two completely separate systems over the course of a couple of hours. If they combine, the chance of flooding increases in spots, especially where the two waves connect and the same spots see torrential rain for an extended period of time.

As of now and if things don’t start a little early, the window for opportunity for our more concentrated action will be from 3-4pm onward, with 5-8pm having the best shot at the moment. We have to watch it all though and we will advise as things develop and timelines potentially change.

We still have one more cold front to get through tomorrow, but this will be fairly weak compared to today’s action. Expect clouds and sun again, humid, highs in the mid to upper 80’s, and the slight chance of a thunderstorm. Any storms that do pop up, will be capable of heavy rain, gusty winds, frequent lightning, and small hail.

Everything will be gone by tomorrow night, and more comfortable air begins to slowly work itself in. We’ll have a sunny day on Friday, with mid 80’s, stiff westerlies, and decreasing humidity.

Our weekend also holds strong, with low to mid 80’s, sunny skies, and comfortable humidity levels both Saturday and Sunday.

In the long range, I continue to feel that mid-August is not looking as cool and/or an extended cool period as depicted by some models, and that we could go for 90+ degrees again the last 1/3 of August.
