NYC Powerful Cold Front Brings Wind & Heavy Rain

12/10/24 9:44am EST

Good morning everyone. We’re watching the pieces come together for a rainy, thundery, and windy time across parts of the Southeast, Mid-Atlantic, Northeast, and New England today and tomorrow as a powerful cold front sweeps through.

We’ll start it off along the Gulf Coast where our system begins to take shape and our cold front draws up that Gulf moisture and energizes itself. Look for scattered clusters of thunderstorms to develop across parts of Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama this afternoon and evening. These storms will move to the east/northeast as a wave of low pressure develops and heads up the Appalachians.

This will help bring a more organized line of heavy showers and thunderstorms this evening and tomorrow across parts of Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina. These storms will have the potential for damaging winds, hail, frequent lighting, torrential rain, and the risk of a few tornadoes.

As low pressure takes the inland route and I95 corridor into New England, heavy rain and wind will spread across New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Massachusetts. We could see a few rumbles of thunder with this, but the primary threat will be heavy rain and damaging winds. In fact, along coastal sections of eastern Long Island, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Massachusetts, we could see wind gusts reach or exceed 60mph.

Combined with the heavy rain, we could see trees easily toppled due to the strong winds and soft soil. This will cause issues in terms of property damage, blocked roads, and power outages tomorrow and possibly into Thursday as we go cold and blustery.

Clouds are already in today and we have some fog as well. Look for PM scattered showers before steadier and heavier rain arrives overnight. Highs today in the low 50’s.

We’ll have windy, mild, and muggy conditions tomorrow with low to mid 60’s possible. It’ll also be a very rainy one with a few rumbles of thunder possible. Ahead and behind the front, look for windy conditions with wind gusts to near 60mph possible along south facing shores.

WEATHER RADAR

Sunshine returns on Thursday, but it won’t do much o help warm us up. We drop into the mid to upper 30’s with windy conditions. Look for more of the same on Friday, but we dial things back to a breeze wind-wise.
