NYC Windy Rainy Thundery Time

Good morning everyone. Our powerful cold front is closing in on the East Coast, with heavy rain, thunderstorms, and strong winds being experienced from New England down into the Southeast.

Our biggest concern as far as strong to severe thunderstorms, belong to areas of North Carolina & the Outer Banks, South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida as the day progresses. As of now, we’re watching that line extend from central and eastern North Carolina, central South Carolina, eastern Georgia, and down across northern Florida.

Look for this activity to strengthen with the afternoon heating and as convection builds with low pressure deepening a bit. While we won’t see widespread severe weather, we still have the risk of strong to severe thunderstorms possible across the mentioned area. Embedded heavier thunderstorm cells could contain damaging winds, hail, frequent lightning, torrential rain and the risk of a few tornadoes. The timeline on this action looks to be from late morning into the evening hours today.

Northward, we will see heavy rain, strong winds, and some embedded thunderstorms across parts of Virgina, Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey, New York, and up into New England. Ahead of the cold front , wind gusts in excess of 55-60mph are possible across south facing shores of Long Island, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Massachusetts.

We catch a brief break this morning as we are sandwiched in between two areas of rain, but the rain does return; as does the strong winds and possible rumbles of thunder. Highs today in the near 60 range, but we go cold overnight and tomorrow behind the front. Winds in NYC could gust to 45mph, whereas winds out on Long Island could reach 60mph, especially out on the Forks.
