NYC Promising Rain Outlook Wednesday Night

11/16/24 9:26am EST

Good morning everyone. We have a windy and milder day in much of the Northeast as 50’s and 60’s return to the area for a milder weekend. Dry weather continues as does the fire risk, but we could see some big relief on the way, especially to interior parts of the Northeast. A large storm system out west will slowly trek our way, with some reinforcing energy from the Southwest and Gulf of Mexico; giving us the opportunity for some soaking rains Wednesday night into Thursday.

That powerful low pressure system is coming ashore as we speak across parts of Washington, Oregon, and California. It’s accompanied by heavy snows in the Pacific Northwest mountain ranges, with 12-24″+ accumulations possible. It’ll also bring some much needed rain to parts of Northern California and will help reduce some of the drought conditions up there.

Strong low pressure and its trailing cold front will help pull up energy from northern Mexico, into the Southwest, and across Texas; spinning off another vigorous low pressure system. Ahead of it, some decent convection is likely with the sharp contrast in air masses. This will help spawn some very heavy showers and thunderstorms across parts of New Mexico and Texas, then eventually into Oklahoma, Kansas, Arkansas, and possibly Missouri.

For now, the focus will be central and northeast Texas in terms of severe weather, but we expect that risk to move northeast as our low pressure moves northeast and drags a strong cold through. Look for the risk of damaging winds, large hail, frequent lightning, and the possibility for a few tornadoes; especially with individual supercell thunderstorms ahead of the main line. We’ll begin watching for heavy thunderstorms tomorrow afternoon, then that chance will continue through Monday from southwest to northeast.
