NYC Soaking Rain & Chilly Weather Likely

11/18/24 9:32am EST

Good morning everyone. We have a busy day overall as the pieces continue to come into place for an active period across several different regions. In the Northeast, we’re enjoying a windy but mild day, but enjoy it now because it’s not built to last.

Our West Coast storm rowing across parts of Washington, Oregon, and California, is heading east into the upper Rockies from the Cascades. Storm force winds are being felt along the West Coast, while winter storm warnings continue. As that system heads east it’ll fade out, but continue to be the steering mechanism behind our next series of events.

That system is giving open passage to our vigorous low pressure system coming out of Texas, and northeast into Oklahoma and Kansas. Our sharp contrast in air masses, plus some strong convection, have been responsible for severe thunderstorms throughout parts of Oklahoma and Texas. Tornado watches remain as a narrow band of strong to severe storms races to the east/northeast.

Look for that line to eventually clip southeast Kansas, all while moving into Arkansas, Missouri, and Louisiana. Damaging winds, large hail, frequent lightning, torrential rains, and a few tornadoes are possible. That line will eventually weaken as low pressure heads into the Upper Midwest and Great Lakes region. However, our trailing cold front will eventually hook up with tropical energy in the Gulf of Mexico and reinvigorate the southern part of the system.

The impact will be two-fold, with heavy showers and thunderstorms developing across the Gulf Coast of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and the panhandle of Florida some time late overnight into tomorrow morning. Low pressure in the Great Lakes will wind down, then another piece of energy behind it will tap that Gulf moisture and low pressure will depend again as it heads east into the Northeast.

This will produce gale force winds across the Great Lakes region of Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New York. It may also pull down enough cold air from Canada that some areas of rain could change over to snow for interior parts of the Northeast & New England. We could also see much-needed soaking rains late Wednesday through Friday in drought-stricken areas of northeast Pennsylvania, northwest New Jersey, and southeast New York.
