NYC Drought Relief Coming
11/19/24 11:16am EST
Good morning everyone. Across parts of the Northeast, today will be the last day we see full sunshine until some time next week. We have an active pattern brewing, with some drought relief on the way. It won’t be perfect or solve all of our problems, but several inches of rain could fall in spots over the next 5 days.
We have two features on the map right now that will be factors in the forecast for the Northeast and New England. Our first feature is low pressure racing into the Upper Plains and into Canada. The second is the leftover front spawning a new wave of energy along the Gulf Coast as it taps tropical energy. Low pressure will fade out in the Great Lakes region, then respawn as our Gulf Coast energy surges northward.
As new low pressure moves east into the Ohio River Valley, it’ll send a nice swath of soaking rain through the Mid-Atlantic into the Northeast and New England. Low pressure will cut itself off, then spokes of energy will reinvigorate or re-spawn new low pressure systems at or near the coast. This will keep wet weather along coastal sections of the Northeast, with some rain changing to snow for interior parts of New York, Pennsylvania, and possibly northwest New Jersey.
Currently, our focus remains across parts of Florida, Alabama, and Georgia. Our re-energized front is helping to create a large batch of heavy showers and thunderstorms moving to the east/northeast. This is bringing torrential rains, rumbles of thunder, and gusty winds across the area. In same cases, we have some isolated severe weather, especially offshore areas of Alabama and the panhandle of Florida.
Look for locally damaging winds, hail, frequent lightning, torrential rain, and the risk of a few waterspouts. This large batch of heavy showers and thunderstorms will eventually spread out into the rest of Georgia and north Florida. The best chance to see some strong to severe thunderstorms will be ahead of this batch with individual cells, and the lower quadrant of our system.
Here is your local NYC Metro forecast –
SATELLITE
Enjoy the last of the sunshine today, with light winds and highs near 60. Morning sun will grace us tomorrow, then it’ll begin to cloud up with near 60 degree temps again. Rain heads in overnight for a chilly and damp one.
WEATHER RADAR
Look for on and off rain on Thursday with raw and chilly conditions in the upper 40’s. Friday gets even nastier as low pressure pushes more cold air down through the Hudson River valley and across the area. We’ll have more on and off showers and downright nasty conditions as highs are stuck in the low 40’s at best. Overnight Friday, don’t be surprised if we see some graupel or wet flakes mixed in with any showers as we dip into the upper 30’s.
We remain stuck in the 40’s on Saturday, with most cloudy skies, a stiff breeze, scattered showers, and highs in the mid to upper 40’s.
