NYC Quiet But Chilly Workweek Ahead

NYC Quiet But Chilly Workweek Ahead

03/17/24 11:04am ET

Good morning everyone. We have fairly quiet conditions in the Northeast until next weekend, but cold air is on the move and we could feel a winter chill starting on Tuesday. We have a couple of reinforcing shots of chilly air that’ll sweep through and reach all the way down into the Gulf States and Southeast. For this reason, we have freeze warnings and freeze watches along the northern tier of the Gulf States, parts of Georgia, and northwest South Carolina.

Our friends down south remain the focus of the majority of the forecasts due to rapid temperature changes and a continued risk of severe weather. This time, Florida will be the focus come late week as a coastal system tries to form and head up the coast. As of now, late Friday morning into late Friday afternoon seems to be the estimated time frame for Florida in terms of torrential rain and embedded severe storms. Some storms could produce large hail and isolated tornadoes, but as of now, the main focus will be on the potential for widespread rain-flooding.

As we go into the weekend, we’ll wait and watch to see if that developing wave of low pressure scoots out to sea, or rides up the coast. For the moment, the best chance to see some coastal action remains in the Southeast and possibly the Mid-Atlantic. We’ll watch the positioning of high pressure to see if the door opens up for our system to race into he Northeast. Right now things remain 50/50 for the Northeast.

Things seem to modify Wednesday with near 50 temps, but then the bottom drops out again on Thursday as we dip back into the mid 40’s. Lows overnight may dip into the 20’s for an unseasonably cold March night.

Friday we begin to watch the pieces of our coastal storm come together, and I’m going to leave next weekend open for now until we get a clearer picture of what’s going on.
