Coastal Storm Lurks Region This Weekend
03/18/24 9:52am ET
Good morning everyone. We continue to watch two big features over the course of the next 5-7 days. The first being a push of chilly to cold air into the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, and across the South. Freeze watches and warnings continue across northeast Texas, most of Arkansas, parts of Louisiana, western Tennessee, most of Mississippi & Alabama, on east into parts of Georgia and South Carolina.
The next feature we’re watching is the potential for a coastal storm along the East Coast, beginning with its genesis early Friday as a wave of low pressure nearing the Gulf Coast of Florida. This has the potential to not only spread flooding rains across most of Florida, it also has the potential to spawn embedded severe weather. We will be watching closely for the potential of damaging winds, large hail, and isolated tornadoes Friday morning into Friday afternoon/evening.
Once it crosses Florida, we’re expecting it to move up the coast into Georgia, South Carolina, then up to Cape Hatteras, NC. Expect heavy rain and rumbles of thunder late Friday into Saturday morning. We’ll be watching closely as low pressure intensifies and tries to move into the Northeast. At this moment, I believe at minimum that it’ll impact the Mid-Atlantic, but the jury is still out for the Northeast and New England. It’s important that you stay tuned on this one, because if the window does open for it to go further north, we are nearing the full moon, which could help enhance the tides for some coastal flooding potential. Winds may also be an issue, with 45-50mph winds possible near Cape Hatteras and along southeast coastal sections of New England.
Here is your local NYC forecast –
SATELLITE
Wind will the theme of this forecast as we waver between breezy and windy over the next several days. Expect a breezy day today with high temps near 50 under sun & clouds. Temps dip into the mid to upper 40’s tomorrow for a brisk day this time of year.
WEATHER RADAR
Wednesday goes milder with mid 50’s, but it’ll be a windy one as a reinforcing shot of cold air ruins the rest of the week. We’ll have the slight chance of a stray shower, but I think most spots will have a dry day. Temps Wednesday night dip into the 25-30 range, then we are back into the mid 40’s for both Thursday and Friday with a stiff breeze.
Clouds increase overnight Friday with the chance of some rain, and we keep that chance going for Saturday. We’re not going into specifics yet as far as how much rain and wind (if any), but we will continue to watch it.
