NYC Rain Possibilities Hold Off Till Wednesday

09/13/24 11:49am ET

Good late morning everyone. The Northeast continues to be the quietest and most pleasant spot across the land right now as sunshine rules and mild to warm temps are here to stay. Things will remain that way until Wednesday, where we should see some increasing clouds, and the chance of some showers in response to a possible coastal storm heading inland from the North Carolina coast.

Today’s heavy shower & thunderstorm action in North Carolina has nothing to do with what may form early in the week, but is more of a pre-cursor of what may spin-off a compact and vigorous wave of low pressure. As we speak, torrential rain with embedded strong to severe storms, is streaming in off of the Atlantic and into the Cape Hatteras region; bringing with it, Special Marine Warnings posted by the National Weather Service for locally highs winds approaching 40mph.

Look for this action to continue, with the potential for some localized flooding and isolated reports of damaging winds, frequent lightning, and the risk of a few waterspouts. If that wave low pressure gets going early in the week, we will see more of a widespread variety of damaging winds, coastal flooding, rain flooding, and a possible severe weather component in parts of South Carolina, North Carolina, and the southeast coast of Virginia.

Now we look to the Southeast, Gulf States, and the Mississippi Valley for more issues linked to the remnants of Hurricane Francine. Tropical energy is still in place, and we are seeing heavy showers and thunderstorms moving in off of the Gulf of Mexico and back into Florida for a 2nd day in a row. The Florida panhandle, Big Bend area, and parts of north Florida, will once again be the focus for more heavy thunderstorms and marine hazards.

We’ll also watch the Florida panhandle, Alabama, and western Tennessee for another round of severe weather. Expect a new round of late afternoon and evening strong to severe storms, with the risk of hail, damaging winds, frequent lightning, torrential rain, and brief tornadoes. We don’t see this risk dissipating for another 48-72hrs, and that energy finally fizzles out and shifts away.
