NYC RAIN SNOW CHANGEOVER OVERNIGHT

NYC RAIN SNOW CHANGEOVER OVERNIGHT – Good morning everyone. We’re waking up to a cloudy but much warmer morning compared to yesterday with the help of an approaching system from the west. Clouds will be with us all day, along with the chance of some late afternoon rain, then things get a little dicey late at night.

Look for mid 40’s today thanks to a southwest flow, but the chance of rain will increase as the day wears on. Moisture will continue to ride along this slow moving frontal boundary while colder air floods in. This will help change any rain to snow late overnight while we drop into the 20’s. We’ll have a brief period of snow that’ll either be gone before sunrise, or not much longer after.

We should squeeze out a coating to an inch out of this, maybe a touch more in some spots that changeover faster and temps drop low enough where everything will freeze and stick. That will be the story though with this system, the potential for a very slick commute tomorrow morning. Any wet patches will freeze and possibly wind up being covered by a light coating of snow, so give yourself some extra time commuting tomorrow, because a light coating + ice is worse than 10″ of snow on untreated roads.

By the time evening hits tomorrow, we should be in the mid to low 20’s, then teens at night. Below normal temps continue on Saturday, with sunny skies, a light westerly breeze, and highs in the upper 20’s to near 30. Clouds increase Saturday night with the approach of our next and much more robust system.

As of now, models continue to trend warmer and warmer with this system, including a more inland track. If this trend continues, expect stubborn cold air to start precipitation off as snow, then a wintry mix to all rain. Once this system begins to depart, we could get a brief changeover back to snow, but it won’t amount to much.

We’ll have to keep a close eye on everything, because how stubborn that cold air is, will dictate how much snow we get on the onset before any changeover to rain. Also, any further shift west will shorten or completely eliminate the period of now in the beginning, and eliminate any chance of snow on the backside.

After this larger system, we return to near-normal and seasonably cold temps, plus yet another system in the works for early to mid week next week. As stated for the past 2 weeks or so, our “thaw’ would end, colder temps would return, and we’d have several snow opportunities, but system path would be questionable.
