NYC Severe Storms Likely Today Plus Tropical Update

Good morning everyone. We have a lot going on today and the rest of the week, so we’ll get into it and break it down step by step. We’ll also discuss the tropics with Tropical Storm Elsa, which will influence our forecast late week.

We start off this morning with a mix of sun and clouds, then we’ll actually go sunny for a little while before the clouds increase again late afternoon/evening. That’ll be associated with a line of storms (or several small lines) that’ll develop upstate and head south/southeast. The angle of approach is a nasty one, and these types of storms have the typical features, plus widespread straight-line winds. Highs today will be in the mid 90’s, cooler at the immediate shore.

WEATHER RADAR

We continue with the hot and humid conditions tomorrow with sunshine and mid 90’s. Another spoke of energy will come across the area, but this one will have a later approach. Expect the chance of some more storms, possibly severe, some time between sunset and 2 or 3am. These may not pack the same punch, but there may be some locally severe weather observed.

Elsa has emerged from Cuba in relatively decent shape. She was able to avoid a lot of land interaction in terms of the center being over land, and most of the interruption occurred with her inflow/outflow. Right now Elsa is bringing very heavy rain and windy conditions to Key West, but things could’ve been a lot worse. We’ll be watching closely to see if she is able to regain strong tropical storm/minimal hurricane status as she treks towards a landfall north of Tampa after making a very close pass. The biggest threat remains copious rains for much of Florida, and the coastal impact of a minor to moderate storm surge. Just because it won’t be “life threatening”, doesn’t mean property is safe. Take action to protect property, such as securing boats properly and moving vehicles away from low-lying areas.

For us, Elsa will help enhance our approaching front for Thursday and Friday. That’ll equate to gusty showers and storms for Thursday and humid mid to upper 80’s; then a showery and breezy day on Friday with humid conditions and low to mid 80’s.

To start the weekend, we’ll see decreasing clouds and highs in the mid to upper 80’s Saturday.
