NYC Severe Weather Risk Helps Break Humidity Temporarily

07/18/24 11:26am ET

Good late-morning everyone. After some violent storms yesterday evening in the Northeast, specifically the NYC Metro Area, the area catches a break as far as oppressive humidity. Relief looks to be short-lived though and our pattern overall keeps the excessive heat locked in over the East Coast, Southeast, Central States, Gulf Coast, Midwest, and West. Essentially it’s everywhere and not going anywhere.

Aside from the heat and humidity, our other focus remains the potential for severe weather. This time, we turn our eyes to the Southeast and Gulf Coast, where we can see some really nasty storms later this afternoon and this evening.

We have already seen some rough weather in parts of Texas & Louisiana with some heavy showers and storms, but the big action is expected later on. Still though, flooding rains and isolated severe weather stretches from Fredericksburg, TX all the way across to Lafayette, LA. as a wave of low pressure rides along our stalled front.

Our focus for widespread severe weather looks to be areas of southeast Virginia, most of North Carolina, most of South Carolina, and parts of east/southeast Georgia. Look for scattered storms to form either a broken line or solid, multi-directional line of very strong storms; then it’ll be a race to the coast. The primary threat with these storms will be damaging winds, large hail, frequent lightning, torrential rain, and the possibility for some tornadoes. Coastal areas of South Carolina and North Carolina could be the hardest hit in this episode.

Stay tuned to your local agencies for the latest watches and warnings. Here is your local NYC Metro forecast –

Look for a mix of sun & clouds today and very warm to hot conditions. It’ll be less humid, but we are still well above average with highs in the upper 80’s to near 90. Look for the same tomorrow, with more sunshine and upper 80’s to near 90.

WEATHER RADAR

Saturday looks more of the same temp-wise, but we begin to bring the higher humidity back. Sunday is hot and humid with highs near 90 or in the low 90’s.

The start of the workweek puts us near 90 again and humid, then some storms expected midweek could hold us in the mid to upper 80’s and very humid. In the long range, upper 80’s to low 90’s want to stick around into the start of August with no signs of any true, prolonged relief.
