Severe Weather Possible Later Today Across NYC Metro Area

07/16/24 10:13am ET

Good morning everyone. We begin with the Northeast today as the remnants of last night’s derecho out in the Central States, will provide enough lift and shear to reignite a powerful line of storms expected to move through parts of Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, and possibly parts of New England.

For today, the Northeast bakes under the continuation of their heatwave, with 95-100 degree temps throughout a big area ranging from New York City, on west into interior sections of the Triangle-State region. Sunshine, high humidity, and very hot conditions, will provide enough “juice” to restart the motor coming into the area.

Look for a fairly formidable line to begin to form in the afternoon, reaching northwest New Jersey and northeast Pennsylvania by late afternoon/early evening. New York City and Long Island won’t be far behind as these storms will be moving very quickly. The biggest risk associated with these storms will be damaging winds in excess of 60mph. However, we could also see large hail and isolated tornadoes.

in other areas, we could also see some severe weather popping up in parts of Arkansas, Kansas, Nebraska, Oklahoma, and extreme northern Texas. While we don’t expect any large organized lines like we saw last night, scattered clusters of severe weather will be capable of very large hail, damaging winds, and isolated tornadoes. This action is likely to happen later at night into the early morning hours.

Here is your local NYC Metro forecast –

Look for sunshine for most of the day, then increasing clouds as that line nears NYC. Highs will be a toasty 95-100, and our late afternoon/evening storms could be on the very heavy side. Winds in excess of 55mph, frequent lightning, torrential rain, isolated hail, and an isolated tornado are all possible.

We do it again tomorrow with mid 90’s, morning sunshine, and afternoon heavy boomers. These storms could rage into the morning hours on Thursday, then we should have PM clearing and upper 80’s. Upper 80’s continue on for Friday with sunshine and no chance of rain.

Your weekend is looking very warm/hot and rain-free so far. We’ll have upper 80’s on Sunday, then upper 80’s to low 90’s on Sunday.
