NYC Showers Storms Precede Near Heatwave Conditions

Good thundery morning everyone (for some). Showers and storms are hitting NJ and parts of Long Island this morning as heatwave-like conditions begin to move in on the area. We’ll get a break later on this morning, then we will be watching the radar for more storms possible later today and into tonight. The big story though will be the heat, which is something I’ve been talking about for the last 10 days or so when we saw signs that the heat in the Midwest may break loose.

For today, some showers with a few hefty embedded rumbles are skipping just north of NYC, but managed to brush the north shore of LI and hit NW NJ. These storms are producing torrential rain and localized flooding conditions. We’ll calm things down a bit, then watch the skies and radar again later today. It’ll be a warm and humid one with highs in the mid 80’s.

Any storms that do develop later today will be capable of small hail, damaging winds, and an isolated tornado.  The best chance to see this action will be west and north of NYC, but we’ll be watching closely to see if anything makes the journey here.

WEATHER RADAR

The next step in this process is the heat. Look for sunshine to return tomorrow with low to mid 90’s in most spots aside from the immediate south-facing shores and east end of Long Island.

We’ll continue onward with mid 90’s, possibly a few isolated upper 90’s Wednesday and Thursday. We’ll have the chance for some strong PM storms Thursday as the heat and humidity reloads; then more mid 90’s on Friday with slightly less humid conditions.

Your weekend is looking hot as well, with more mid 90’s and high humidity returning Saturday; then near 90 temps on Sunday with the chance of a few storms again. We get a little reprieve for a few days after that, but I think we get back into some 90’s again as we near the end of July.
