NYC Sleet Primary Issue Overnight Tonight

Good morning everyone. Things continue to come together for tonight & tomorrow’s overrunning precip event, and the forecast is holding rather steady. Winter Weather Advisories have been posted for the NYC area and parts of Long Island, showing that we do have some wintry precip on the way; but also confirms that this is a minor event for our area. We’re fine-tuning timelines today, then we’ll await for the “fun” to begin and watch the radar/cold air closely.

After a few morning blue spots, clouds will lower and thicken. We’re nowhere near as mild as were were yesterday, as 65-70 degree temps will be replaced with mid to upper 30’s for highs today. That’ll set the stage for some frozen precip moving in between 12am and 2am overnight tonight.

We may actually start out with a few sprinkles until the cold air is drawn down into the atmosphere by heavier precip. If we do start out with sprinkles, it won’t last long as we get a brief period of snow and/or sleet, changing over to all sleet. Sleet will be the biggest issue for the NYC area and parts of Long Island, with the south shore of Long Island seeing a shorter period of wintry mix before changing to rain.

The previous forecast of a coating to 2″ remains, but again, the majority will probably be sleet at this point with things trending a few degrees warmer in the atmosphere. Regardless, it all changes to a plain cold rain everywhere by mid to late morning in the area and will be washed away with temps above freezing tomorrow.  To complicate things a bit, we also have the chance of a brief period of freezing rain during this changeover process, so use caution regardless of this being a minor event.

Areas upstate continue to be in the bullseye, with either an extended period of snow, sleet, and freezing rain, or an all snow event. For those who see a little bit of both, we’re looking at a crunchy 4-6″ of snow/sleet and a layer of ice. For those who see an all snow event, particularly central NY and interior New England, a healthy 6-12″+ dose of snow is on the menu.

WEATHER RADAR

We have a quiet a cold/chilly weekend ahead, with sunshine both days and Sunday being the “warmer” of the two. Look for mid 30’s Saturday, then low 40’s Sunday.

Cold temps return on Monday with a reinforcing shot of Canadian air, then we modify fairly quickly where Wednesday may hit 50 degrees. Things are quiet overall after this, and we continue to see no opportunities for any major, late season snowstorms in the medium range.
