NYC Wintry Mix Issues Tomorrow Night Into Friday AM

Good morning everyone. Very mild air has settled into the area for today, but we’re climbing to the top of a big rollercoaster as temps drop overnight, and a moisture-laden system heads towards us. The NYC area won’t see the brunt of this system, but we do have plenty of issues.

Stubborn clouds are hanging around the area, which was expected. We’ll see decreasing clouds as we get into the afternoon, and temps hovering in the upper 50’s to low 60’s right now, will go into the mid to upper 60’s depending on the amount of sunshine we get. Temps drop overnight, more than 35+ degrees in some spots as lows head into the upper 20’s to near 30.

We’ll cloud up again tomorrow, and highs will be in the mid to upper 30’s, setting the stage for the overnight hours. Overrunning precip will ride up and over the cold air trapped in place tomorrow night. We’ll start off as some light small flakes as temps drop into the upper 20’s to near 30, then make those flakes bigger as moisture increases and temps in the mid-layers rise slightly.

WEATHER RADAR

Depending on how much cold air is able to hang on in the atmosphere, will determine how long the period of snow is. It’s quite possible for the early-birds Friday morning, you could still see big flakes falling. Eventually, everything changes to sleet, then a mix of sleet and rain, then a plain cold rain. Highs Friday in the mid 30’s.

For the NYC/LI area, I’m sticking to yesterday’s forecast of a coating to 2″ before we start mixing and melting.  Areas N&W of NYC and New England, well that’s another story. We’ll have to watch the radar and the cold air to see who holds onto snow even longer, and who never sees a changeover. For those who see a delayed changeover, 4-6″ is possible. For those who see all snow, and it’s safe to say that central NY and interior spots of New England fall into this category, they will see 6-12″+ of snow.
