NYC Snow Hopes Fade Away

Good late morning everyone. We continue to watch our next system, and while some areas remain consistent as far as expected snowfall, other areas are trending away from any snowfall at all.

Over the course of today and the overnight hours, low pressure will exit the Rockies and dive towards the Texas & Louisiana Gulf Coast. It’ll tap abundant moisture and energy to give coastal sections of Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama some heavy showers and thunderstorms late tomorrow into Wednesday morning. As of now, we could see some strong to severe thunderstorms embedded within a large swath of rain, but we don’t see any widespread severe weather risks.

However, the big story will be the heavy snow expected across parts of the Midwest. Overruning moisture into the very cold air, will help develop bands of heavy snow across parts of southeast Kansas, northeast Oklahoma, lower Missouri, upper Arkansas, and into parts of Kentucky & Tennessee. While we’ll most likley see a large blanket of 4-8/6-10″ type snowfall accumulations, we could see 10-14″+ accumulations in higher elevations and where heavier banding develops.

After a snowy time in the Midwest, our focus shifts towards the Mid-Atlantic as low pressure reaches the East Coast and tries to take a ride up. Even though we don’t see the same type of system depected 2-3 days ago, we still have the possibility of locally heavy snows and strong winds across southeast Virginia, extreme northwest North Carolina, and lower parts of Maryland.

As of now, we’re probably looking at a 4-8/6-12″ type snowfall late Wednesday into very early Thursday as a very fast-moving low pressure fails to make a turn up to the Northeast. This will not only shorten the duration of the snow for the Mid-Atlantic, but it’ll also spare the NYC/Long Island area, including most of New Jersey, with either very light snow, or no snow at all.
