NYC Soaking Rain Likely Tomorrow Flooding Possible
Good morning everyone. While Tropical Storm Earl evades us as expected, we pay the price in other ways which is something we’ve been discussing for about a week now. The lack of tropical systems in the vicinity allows our front to have oomph to it, but also move slower. This will save us as far as seeing a complete washout in the NYC/ Long Island area for today, although it sets us up for a soaking rain tomorrow with possible flooding. The end of the week looks spectacular, and we’ll discuss it all below.
SATELLITE
For today, the clouds are here and it’ll be a humid and seasonably warm one. As discussed during my live feed 2 days ago, most of today’s rain will be confined to NEPA, the Hudson Valley, and parts of NW NJ. We could see a few stray showers here, but don’t cancel your afternoon BBQ’s as not everyone will see rain and it’ll be rather brief. Expect highs today in the upper 70’s to low 80’s.
Tonight we’ll have a better chance of rain as the front meanders our way and a wave of low pressure begins to form. That wave will enhance the rain tomorrow, and we can expect a soaking rain, heavy at times, with a few rumbles of thunder possible. The biggest threat will be flash flooding due to the dry soil combined the the rain amounts. Remember, dry soil can be as big of a problem as oversaturated soil since it has a hard time absorbing water. Highs tomorrow will be in the low to mid 70’s at best.
WEATHER RADAR
Moisture hangs around Wednesday with the cloudy skies and the chance of a few showers, especially in the morning. We may see some blue patches late, but we remain cool in the low to mid 70’s again.
Sunshine returns Thursday and Friday as we begin to dry out and temps return to the upper 70’s to low 80’s. Your weekend is also looking stellar, with sunshine and low to mid 80’s.
While we have increasing tropical activity, things remain quiet for the east coast with everything staying well offshore. Hurricane Danielle is beginning to race NNE and into the higher latitudes of the North Atlantic, while Tropical Storm Earl (expected to be a hurricane), will past to the east of Bermuda. We could see some high surf as he’s expected to become fairly powerful, but that’ll be the extent of his impact. Otherwise, we’ll continue to watch old fronts since the Cape Verde wave activity is being held to a minimum as far as anything of concern.
