NYC STORM GALE COASTAL FLOOD WARNINGS ISSUED
Good morning everyone. We have a decent-sized Nor’easter/Coastal storm heading our way in New York City and other parts of the area. Along the coast, we have flood warnings popping up, as well as storm and gale warnings just offshore. It’ll be a quick-mover in terms of it’s worst effects, but those living along or near the shore should pay close attention on this one.
EASTERN SATELLITE
We start off with “the calm before the storm” today. We’ll have sun and clouds this morning and a cold start with calm winds. Followed by lowering and thickening clouds, a southeast wind starting to pick up, and highs in the low 50’s
REGIONAL RADAR
You can plainly see on the radar some heavy echoes heading our way from the southwest. This is beginning stages of our Nor’easter which hasn’t formed yet. However, things will get going very late tonight with rain starting between 10pm and 1am. Winds will swing east and become stiff overnight 15-20mph with higher gusts. Along the immediate shore, those gusts could be about 5mph stronger.
LOCAL RADAR NEW YORK CITY
Tomorrow will be the peak of our Coastal Storm’s effects. Expect rain, heavy at times, with 15-25 sustained winds and gusts to 45mph around the city. Along the immediate shore notch those winds up to 25-35 mph and gusts to near 50mph. Out at places such as Orient and Montauk, they could potentially see gusts to near 60mph.
Aside from the strong, gusty winds and heavy rain, moderate coastal flooding will be an issue for 2 high tide cycles tomorrow (one in the morning, one on the afternoon) in areas prone to flooding when we see these strong Nor’easters. Again, this is not a life threatening situation in terms of the storm surge you’d see during a hurricane. However, those residents in known areas that flood, should take action to protect property – especially areas in Rockaway, Broad Channel, Long Beach, Freeport, Baldwin, Merrick, Bellmore, Seaford, Wantagh, Lindenhurst, Bayshore, and other flood-prone areas. Most residents of these areas know which parts of their neighborhood flood, so don’t catch yourself off-guard.
LOCAL RADAR PHILADELPHIA
The worst is gone by tomorrow evening, leaving behind with is stubborn clouds and scattered showers. Just as you’d see mostly cloudy skies and scattered flurries after a sizable Nor’easter in the winter, we’ll be left with mostly cloudy skies and scattered light showers for Sunday as everything pulls away. There will be nothing organized and most of the showers will be popcorn-like and focused upstate, but we could see a few make our way; highs in the mid to upper 50’s with a steady west light breeze.
A small disturbance slips on by Monday, giving us a quick shot of steady rain ending before late afternoon. It’ll also reinforce the cool air for the week and give us that nice but cool Halloween forecast.
In the long range, we reset the pattern and wait to see if more coastal systems are possible.
