NYC Tornado Chance Increases From Hurricane Ida Remnants
Good morning everyone. Yesterday we discussed which areas had the better chance to see the highest rain amounts from Hurricane Ida’s remnants. We still believe NW New Jersey will be one of those areas, but with the bulk of the rain shifting a little further west and north, the Poconos of PA and NY are going to get in on the action too. This will put the NYC/Long Island area and southwestward in a different sector of Ida’s remnants, plus we will still see some very heavy rain.
SATELLITE
For this morning, we are in the more “stable” area of precipitation, with on and off light to moderate rain and cool temps. Highs will be in the low 70’s.
Later this evening and into the nighttime, the more convective area will pay a visit. This will equate to lines of gusty, heavy rain and strong to severe storms. There is an increased risk of brief tornados in the area. If they do occur, some very localized damage may occur; including downed trees and power outages.
We also have the risk for flash flooding due to the saturated grounds from Henri. The greatest chance to see flooding, will be in the typical flood prone spots; with the more widespread flooding occurring in NW NJ and the Poconos of NY/PA. Overall, I still believe 4-8″+ of rain will occur with Ida.
WEATHER RADAR
Heavy showers and storms will sick around until early tomorrow morning, then we’ll get into some clearing late. Expect highs in the low 70’s again.
Sunshine with dry and pleasant weather moves in for Friday and we’ll go for mid 70’s for highs.
Your holiday weekend is looking excellent, and I think we avoid the front-related rain by keeping it to a minimum on Sunday night. Expect sunny skies and mid to upper 70’s Sat; a mix of sun and clouds Sunday with more mid to upper 70’s; then clearing skies Monday with near 80 temps.
