NYC Hurricane Ida Remnants Flooding Threat

Good morning everyone. Clouds from Hurricane Ida’s remnants are starting to stream into the area, and will continue to lower and thicken throughout the day and overnight. Ida will be bringing a lot of rain into the Northeast as expected, but it might be too much rain, especially in areas that don’t need anymore due to Hurricane Henri’s epic rain totals not long ago.

For today, things reman calm but cloudy. Thin high clouds will give us veiled sunshine, then we’ll get a little more grey as the day goes on. We’ll still be able to reach the mid to upper 80’s even with the clouds, and it’ll be a muggy one as well.

WEATHER RADAR

Rain begins to move into tomorrow, but the heaviest action reserves itself for overnight and Thursday. It’ll also be much cooler with highs in the low 70’s at best. We could also see a few embedded thundershowers, especially in the afternoon. Look for calm NE winds, but they’ll increase and get more stiff as we head towards sunset.

Overnight Wednesday, expect heavy rain, some rumbles of thunder, and a steady NE wind with some gusts in the 20-25mph range. The risk of flooding will begin at this point, and Thursday morning’s commute to work may be a big problem.

Heavy rain, gusty winds, and a few rumbles of thunder continue into late morning/early afternoon; then we’ll see some partial clearing. We may even see a nice sunset on Thursday. High’s near 70, lows will have a fall bite in the upper 50’s.

Overall, I think we wind up with a large swath of 4-8″+ of rain. This is going to cause a problem in areas that are already saturated, and flooding will be widespread. Best chance to see the largest amounts will be NW New Jersey with the extra lift they have from the elevation. That’ll enhance the rain and it’ll be a major issue with the small streams and rivers up there.

Once we get through this, pleasant weather arrives. Expect sunshine Friday and Saturday with mid to upper 70’s and low humidity. A reinforcing shot of cool air arrives Sunday/Monday, so we’ll have to look out for a few widely scattered showers, but don’t cancel any plans. Look for a mix of clouds and sun Sunday & Monday with  highs near 80 each day.
