NYC Rainy Saturday Morning Watching Hurricane Ida

Good rainy and cloudy morning everyone. As expected, rain has blossomed over parts of the area, and now that the radar is lit up, it’ll give us a better idea what to expect today. Meanwhile, we’re keeping a close eye on Hurricane Ida, which is posing a real threat for the Louisiana and possibly Mississippi Coast. Let’s get to the forecast.

Rain has popped up across Long Island and parts of the City, slowly drifting in all directions southward. We’ll have cloudy skies for the rest of the day, with some spotty, pop-up downpours possible at any time. Highs today will be an unseasonably cool 70-75.

We improve a bit tomorrow under a mix of sun and clouds. We’ll have the slight chance of scattered showers with highs a humid near 80.

WEATHER RADAR

Your week starts off very warm and humid, with 85-90 degree temps under variable cloudiness on Monday. We’ll have the chance for a few scattered showers and storms; then we repeat again on Tuesday, but with more sunshine and no rain.

Clouds will increase on Wednesday as Hurricane Ida’s remnants start to make their way up here. Expect rain starting late Wednesday or overnight, continuing into Thursday morning. Highs Wednesday will be a muggy 80, then we do a drier and less humid 75-80 Thursday afternoon once things clear out.

So far, Friday is looking pleasant with dry conditions and highs again in the 75-80 range.

In the tropics, Hurricane Ida is the big story and will remain so for a couple of days. As of 8am this morning, she has winds of 85mph and will begin to rapidly deepen. A landfalling category 4 hurricane is possible somewhere between New Orleans and the central Louisiana coast. If Ida’s center goes over or just to the west of New Orleans (25-50 miles west), it could potentially be worse than Katrina believe it or not.

Katrina went just to the east of New Orleans, taking the worst surge with it. The levee system failed, which is what made Katrina so bad. Hurricane Ida will surely test the levee repairs/upgrades, and any jog to the west inside the cone will make things worse for New Orleans, possibly catastrophic.
