NYC Tricky Forecast Tomorrow Light Accumulations Possible
Good morning everyone. Yesterday’s system is long gone after dropping the expected 4-8″+ in our area. New Jersey and parts of Long Island came in as the “winners” with larger areas getting into that upper range of the scope, and a few spots breaking past that 8″ mark. Replacing it is very cold air, and that’ll help set us up for this fast moving system tomorrow, which is much weaker, but almost as tricky.
SATELLITE
We’ll have a dry day today with sunshine and steady northwesterlies, and we may not break 30 degrees with highs 25-30 in most spots. Overnight we begin to cloud up, and that’ll shield us dropping into the teens again. Expect lows in the low to mid 20’s.
F5 WEATHER RADARS
Tomorrow’s system is fast moving and weak, with most of the energy going just north of the City. However, we’ll be watching to see if a wave forms along it as it’s departing, and that may enhance the precip a little bit (especially just north of the City).
For the moment, I’m going to call for the chance of some light snow or a rain/snow mix, with possibly a dusting to an inch. If that wave forms just south of us or to our east, it might be able to draw enough cold air through the atmosphere to keep things all snow or change it back to snow, giving us a little bit more than an inch.
The best chance to see accumulating snow will be areas N&W of the NYC area, and maybe the northern fringe of NYC such as the upper Bronx. If that wave forms, areas may see a quick 1-3″. If it doesn’t, expect a dusting to an inch.
We’ll watch the radar tomorrow morning to see if there are any enhancements and where the rain/snow line sets up. Timing looks to be early/mid morning to early afternoon.
For Wednesday, we are sunny briefly, then clouds begin to increase again. Thursday and Friday’s system looks unorganized and will probably be a “two-parter”. For the time being, we’re going to call for the chance of some light snow Thursday, then the chance of some light snow or wintry mix Friday.
We are in a very active period at this point, and it looks to remain so throughout all of February.
