NYC Tropical Update Hurricane Lee

NYC Tropical Update Hurricane Lee

Good morning everyone. We have a lot going on as NYC enters a fairly unsettled period which has nothing to do with Hurricane Lee. Then we have Hurricane Lee itself, which bears close watching, especially for the New England coast.

As of this moment, Hurricane Lee is looking ragged and weekend from some unfriendly atmosphere it has bumped into. Winds are now down to 115mph, but things should relax and Lee should gain some momentum again strength-wise. Before it makes its turn north, we expect Lee to expand in size, and possibly reach Category 4 status again. After that, we will be watching very closely the timing of our next front and positioning of high pressure. This is why as of now, it’s impossible to predict the outcome of this and Lee’s final path.

Areas from Cape Cod to Maine need to continue to watch closely, and for obvious reasons, Nova Scotia. That being said, a landfall on the west end of Nova Scotia does not take New England out of the woods on this one. A landfall on the west end of Nova Scotia would bring tropical storm conditions to parts of New England, plus a major storm surge along the New England coast. A landfall in central Maine or a brush with Cape Cod, brings the heaviest precip and wind into parts of New England, and could bring a damaging storm surge into Long Island, especially the Forks and North Shore. Think of the storm surge our area had during “The Perfect Storm” in 1991. So we all need to watch this carefully.

For today, look for some blue patches here and there, with scattered showers and storms. Highs will be a humid mid 80’s. Tomorrow we hang out around 80, with more scattered showers and storms.

WEATHER RADAR

Your workweek starts off unsettled, with more clouds, scattered showers, and highs near 80. Tuesday we should have some morning sun, then clouds roll back in for some more scattered shower action. Highs near 80 again.

We’ll cool off on Wednesday with more scattered showers and highs in the mid to upper 70’s. For Thursday and Friday, I’m going to hold off for now as we watch Hurricane Lee. I do not expect a direct hit here in NYC, but there are elements that could impact us depending not he final path.
