NYC Very Hot Conditions Materialize Tomorrow Through Monday Possibly Tuesday

Good morning everyone. We have ourselves a transition day today as the hottest airmass of the season thus far prepares to move in. We’ve been talking about this moment for almost 3 weeks now, and the dates we focused on fell into the spectrum quite nicely. The only issue we had forecast-wise, was Tropical Storm Fay’s lasting effects putting a dent in what would’ve been a Thursday start to this heat. Other than that, we hit the bullseye, now let’s see if this constitutes a heatwave or not. Either way, we have a hot few to several days ahead.

Today we transition. with mostly cloudy to cloudy skies, and a few showers and storms around. Most of the energy will be to our NW and NE, but we can’t rule out some pop up action around here. Highs today will be in the mid 80’s with humid conditions.

The sun returns tomorrow with hardly any wind to speak of. Expect highs in the mid 90’s in most spots, with slightly “cooler” conditions along immediate south facing shores where a weak seabreeze may develop.

Mid to upper 90’s manifest easily on Sunday with temps prior to sunrise only dipping into the low 80’s. A few areas such as Downtown Brooklyn, Central Queens, Jersey City, and Newark could flirt with 100.

Peak heat will be Monday as mid to upper 90’s return, but upper 90’s may be more commonly found. Again, the spots listed for Sunday’s forecast may flirt with 100. We could also see a hefty thunderstorm in the afternoon, but action will be scattered.

Depending on the thunderstorm action or lack thereof, Tuesday could be another bonus day in the 90’s. We’ll be keeping a close eye on that and see how hot we get or if we “sink” back down into the upper 80’s.

As far as the heatwave talk, the old definition was 5 days and the “new” definition 3 days. I tend to be old school and look for the 5 day hit to constitute a true heatwave. Had Fay not happened, I truly feel we would’ve gotten those 5 days, possibly even more. Regardless, we told you what days to look for very hot conditions, and it looks like we found a way to make lemonade out of lemons.

Stay tuned and we’ll see if Tuesday winds up being a bonus day for 4 very hot days straight.
