NYC WARM AIR ISSUES HERE ONWARD

NYC WARM AIR ISSUES HERE ONWARD – Good morning everyone, Happy Hump Day! Last week I spoke about how when warm air is expected in this area, the cold air likes to fight back, especially from the direction of our maritime regions in New England. This seems to be the case today as warm air is having a hard time fully crossing into our area due to an occlusion draped across the region to our north. This will make for a cloudy morning, with scattered light showers, and partial clearing in the afternoon; highs near 60 in the NYC area, but mid 50’s along the shores of Coney Island, Staten Island, and The Rockaways.

Tomorrow continues to look complicated as far as how high our temps will go. Fog will move into the area tonight, especially along the coastal sections, as winds die down and warm air interacts with the relatively cold ocean. Depending on how fast this clears out will determine how high our temps go. As of now, it doesn’t look as if we’re going to break many records in the area. However, we could be in for a big surprise as things will warm up quickly if the sun is able to burn through the low and mid-level clouds. As of now, I’m calling for mid 60’s in Manhattan, central Brooklyn, and central Queens, with mid to upper 50’s at the immediate coast. This could all change if we can clear things out early and we get a good block of sunlight unhindered by cloud cover from late morning onward. If this is the case, temps will soar into the 70’s, especially in Manhattan, and low to mid 60’s along the beaches.

Thursday night, that pesky frontal boundary begins to push back and we’re back into the maritime air once again. Patchy fog and drizzle will roll back in and stick with us for much of Friday. As of now, Friday looks to be mostly cloudy and a slight chance of some drizzle throughout the day, highs 55-60. Similar air will stick around for Saturday until the cold front arrives to clear things out. We’ll have a chance of drizzle in the morning, then some steadier rain later in the day, highs 60-65. There have been a few mentions of thunderstorms possible, but I feel that the best chance to hear any rumbles of thunder will be far to the west of us and upstate New York as the bulk of the energy passes to our north. If we do see any rumbles of thunder here, any line that forms will have to be strong to make it this way; and anything we do see will probably be very weak as it crosses the area.

On Sunday, things begin to temporarily cool down as sunny skies, dry conditions, and mid 40’s dominate the NYC area for a couple of days. An active pattern is still emerging for early March that we’re keeping an eye on.
