NYC Winter Makes Brief Return But Next Week Improves

Good morning everyone. Don’t let the headline fool you, today’s wind is not our brief return to winter. We’ll go through a series of ups and downs this week, before the bottom drops out late Thursday and into Friday as a large system moves through. However, we have some better news in the long range (kinda sorta) in the sense that prospects for a cut-off low are fading away. The only negative on that is that we’ll have a faster moving pattern, which equates to more rain and some reinforcing shots of cooler air through mid-April.

For today, the wind is the big story and that’ll keep blustery conditions with us till the evening. Temps will be dead-on seasonal, with highs in the mid 50’s. We’ll improve things tomorrow as those winds almost die off completely, and we go for low 60’s for highs.

Wednesday begins the process of getting colder air in here for late week as a fairly large system treks our way. Expect rain developing by late morning/early afternoon, and that’ll stick around overnight as well. Look for highs near 60, and we could have some flooding in poor drainage areas.

Colder air starts working in for Thursday, and clouds & rain stick around till late morning/early afternoon. It’ll be raw out, then the wind returns as well as some partial clearing. Highs 45-50, but dropping quickly after sunset. Lows Thursday night will be very cold for our first day of April, dropping into the upper 20’s in the NYC area, and low to mid 20’s away from the City.

We won’t recover much on Friday, with blustery conditions and highs around 15 degrees below average. That’ll put us in the 40-45 range at best.

Our weekend improves as we modify quickly. We’ll be slightly below average with low 50’s Saturday, but then return to average Sunday with sunshine and upper 50’s.

The cut-off low I was talking about the last few days doesn’t seem to pan out. We’ll keep an eye out just in case things change, but if it doesn’t unfold, we’re looking at a milder start to next week with some 60’s possible. Also, if the cut-off low doesn’t form, it opens us up to a faster moving pattern; with systems similar to Wednesday’s. That’ll equate to mild air ahead of the system, then relatively chilly air behind it.
