NYC WINTRY PRECIP SLOW START COMPLICATED FORECAST REMAINS
Good morning everyone. For those waking up early and expecting the ground to be whitened already, there is some disappointment on some faces, happiness on others. However, this is just part of the process and the radar will begin to fill in with wintry precip over the next couple of hours.
EASTERN SATELLITE
Some scattered flurries and light snow flakes have peppered the area already, but the main batch of precip remains to our west and south. As usual, it’ll take time for that radar to fill, but eventually we’ll be getting some snow and sleet into the area; sometime between 7 and 9am.
SNOW MAP REMAINS UNCHANGED
The snow and sleet accumulation map I created a few days ago remains the same in my book. However, with the later start to the precip (and I warned about timing will be key), we may end up on the lower end of this spectrum as far as snow and sleet accumulations (especially on Long Island and the NYC area.) . Remember, this map depicts snow and sleet, not just snow. We could get enough sleet/heavy enough sleet to pile it up a bit and make it feel like you’re shoveling gravel if you attempt.
By early to late afternoon, sleet mixes with freezing rain and rain, then goes to all rain by late evening. Aside for areas north and west of the City, you could wake up tomorrow morning and it’ll look as if nothing happened as we rise through the mid to upper 30’s tonight with rain; then finish out with sun and clouds, windy conditions and mid 40’s tomorrow.
REGIONAL RADAR
The sun returns completely on Thursday, with lighter winds and mid 40’s. Clouds increase overnight Thursday with our next system heading our way, but we’ll be fully into the warm sector this time around.
Expect rain and possible flood watches posted for Friday, highs in the upper 40’s to low 50’s. Rain may be gone by sunrise on Saturday, giving us partial clearing, breezy conditions, and mid 40’s.
For Sunday, seasonably cold air returns with mid to upper 30’s.
LOCAL RADAR NEW YORK CITY
In the long range, we’ll be keeping an eye on this continuing active pattern, combined with possibly a more friendly pattern for those who like snow. However, we’ve seen this in the past and it may be long-range “fools gold”, with friendlier looking systems suppressed south or not strong enough.
Stay tuned as we see if anything develops or not.
