Rain Slowly Slides Up East Coast Towards NYC

03/27/24 11:18am ET

Good morning everyone. Our wave low pressure expected to bring rain up and down the East Coast is slowly taking shape. Rain already dots interior sections of the Northeast, down through interior parts of the Mid-Atlantic, and into the Southeast; but the concentrated, more steady rain, remains about 12-24hrs out.

In the meantime, that organizing wave in the Southeast continues to push a narrow line of heavy rain with embedded severe weather across northern and Central Florida. Marine warnings have been posted along the gulf coast just north of Tampa, and we should see some of that heavier weather make it to shore and spark off some watches/warnings from the shore, inland. Across areas of Florida, this is going to remain a problem through tomorrow as that wave of low pressure slowly drags a cold front through the state. Look for a narrow band of heavy showers and storms, with isolated severe weather. The biggest risk remains locally strong winds, isolated large hail, waterspouts, and isolated tornadoes.

As our cold front drags across Florida, look for heavy rain to impact southeast Georgia, the coastal plains of South Carolina, and eastern North Carolina. Low pressure will begin to hit its peak convention off of Cape Hatteras, which is why flood watches have been posted for sections of North Carolina. Look for heavy rain and embedded rumbles of thunder, up and down the Southeast coast overnight tonight into tomorrow. The heaviest rain looks to spare the big cities in the Northeast, but they’re still looking at a soaking rain from DC to NYC and on into Boston. Rain may end as wind-driven snow in parts of upper Maine and New England.
