Strongest (Offshore) Storm of the Season Possible Early Next Week

Strongest (Offshore) Storm of the Season Possible Early Next Week

Good morning everyone. Clouds remain socked into the Northeast and New England as just about everywhere is enjoying quiet weather aside from the West Coast. That will change as that system will emerge from the Rockies and take the southern route, yet again posing another risk of severe weather and flooding for the Gulf States and Southeast.

We are also watching an interesting trend in the models in terms of this system retrograding to the west before “leaving the map”. There are several things that could happen if that did come to fruition. First and foremost, the deep blocking will add more fuel to an already-deep low pressure system, possibly making it the most powerful system of the season so far in terms of millibar readings. Luckily for us, it will remain offshore; however, with a jog back to the west, New England could get nipped with some snow. It will also increase the winds in the Northeast, as well as the risk of coastal flooding, high surf, and beach erosion. We could also see Hurricane Force Wind Warnings posted offshore with these tightly packed isobars we are seeing.

At minimum, we already have those risks for the Southeast coast as this low gets going prior to heading out to sea. We also have the risk of severe weather, isolated tornadoes, and flash flooding along the Gulf States, lower Midwest, and the Southeast. As far as timelines, we’re looking at overnight tomorrow through Tuesday west to east, then possibly overnight Tuesday into early Thursday for the Northeast/New England IF the system retrogrades.

WEATHER RADAR

Your weekend is looking quiet and cool/chilly, but at least the sun returns. Expect sunshine and low 40’s Saturday, then mid 40’s on Sunday.

Monday cools back down into the low 40’s, then Tuesday slips into the mid to upper 30’s and a stiff breeze as that Southeast storm starts to interact with blocking high pressure to our north. As far as the risk of coastal flooding and high surf, some time on Tuesday onward will be the window.
