TOASTY LATE NYC SUMMER POSSIBLE
Good morning everyone. Before we jump into the long range for New York City with a hot story possibly brewing, we still have much to get through; including some rain, thunder, and even some comfortable temps before a potential late summer uppercut.
EASTERN SATELLITE
First, we’re starting off real beautiful here, with partly to mostly sunny skies, a cool light breeze, and temps in low 70’s. However, clouds will increase as we go on and we’ll have a slight chance of a few showers. Our first wave of energy is going to our north, taking most of the precip with it, so don’t expect much if any. Highs today will be in the upper 70’s to near 80.
Overnight, we’ll be watching for another wave to develop and head into the area. This one will give us a better shot at some heavy rain with embedded loud thunder. Clouds and the chance of rain/thunder sticks around for tomorrow, but the chance will gradually decrease as the day goes on; leaving us with the chance of a scattered shower or gusty thunderstorm. Highs a muggy mid 80’s.
REGIONAL RADAR
On Thursday, things turn comfortable again, with decreasing clouds and highs near 80. That airmass sticks around Friday and Saturday with low 80’s, then the dog days start to creep back in for Sunday. Look for gradually increasing humidity on Sunday, highs in the mid to upper 80’s.
LOCAL RADAR NEW YORK CITY
Here is where things get interesting, and I’ve been keeping an eye on this for weeks now to the ire of some. Heat wants to return in a big way and it may get its chance. As of now, Monday and Tuesday are looking hot, with highs in the upper 80’s to low 90’s. How hot we go and how long it remains, all hangs on a series of fronts looking to dip back some maritime air. If they don’t make it into our area, we may see upper 80’s and 90’s all the way into and for Labor Day weekend.
We have a long way to go, but the potential is there. This is something I’ve been watching LONG before any models got to this crossroads. Heat building far and high into the plains has to go somewhere. With our troughy weather, and a maritime push, it was bound to snap back in a big way.
Late season heat is not rare or anything new. While many summers have seemed to tame by Labor Day weekend, 1998, 2003, 2004, 2008, and 2011 come to mind as years we’ve held onto summer till the end. In fact, the Labor Day Derecho of 1998 is what brought relief from the intense heat that day. This is also another reason why we’ll be keeping a close lookout for severe weather if the heat does manifest itself to round out August and into early September.
